Mystery of twins village
The doctors in India are wracking their brains to solve the riddle of 220 plus twins born to 2,000 families in the far-flung village of Kodinhi in Kerala. Experts are wondering at the uncommon phenomenon of twin births which is nearly six times more than the global average.
In 2008, 300 women delivered healthy babies and, out of those deliveries, 15 pairs of twins were born in the village. As per the population census, 60 pairs of twins were born in the past five years in Kodinhi village. Apparently, the rate of twins is increasing with every passing year, and is expected to break the previous records in 2017!Kerala-based doctor Dr. Krishnan Sribiju, who has a natural interest in studying the science behind delivery of twins, has been trying to delve into the mystery of the large number of twin births in Kodinhi for two years. He is of the opinion that the actual number of twins in the village is more than what has been officially recorded in the papers. In my medical opinion there are around 300 to 350 twins within the village boundaries of Kodinhi, Dr. Sribiju says. The villagers say that the incidences of delivering twins began three generations back. Expressing his excitement over the medical significance of the case of ever-growing number of twins, Dr. Sribiju says, To the best of my knowledge, this medical marvel began somewhere between 60 to 70 years ago.According to him, the possible reason behind the twin phenomenon could be the food and drink taken by the villagers. Without access to detailed biochemical analysis equipment I cannot say for certain what the reason for the twinning is, but I feel that it is something to do with what the villagers eat and drinksays Dr. Sribiju. The denizens of Kodinhi, which is now nicknamed as the twin town have proudly established the Twins and Kin Association (TAKA) to register and provide support for the twins of Kodinhi and their families. Given the fact that the cost of raising twins can be high and it can be a physically demanding job for the mother to bear them, TAKA can perform the role of educating and supporting the villagers.
